My first crack at leading a paints team was certainly an ambitious one! For Cinderella, our set designer dreamed up an art-nouveau-inspired stage concept flanked by rotating flats representing both the rebelling village and Cinderella’s forest home. In addition to designing and painting both sides of those six rotating flats, I also painted two wagons and both sides of a rotating wall flat. I tried to incorporate the art nouveau movement’s characteristic organic swirls wherever I could in the paint treatments, including, to my great delight, a slightly modified version of artist Anton Seder’s 1890 lithography thistle motif (see below). I was greatly aided in this effort by extremely game fellow cast members who were always willing to pick up a paintbrush during their downtime at rehearsal.
