In painting Frozen for Waco Civic Theatre’s 2025 closer, I faced an interesting challenge: how to make Elsa’s castle absolutely magical while buying as little paint as possible? As a contract contributor added reasonably deep into the rehearsal process, I joined a show nearing the end of its budget but determined to make a splash. Upon assessing WCT’s paint closet, I realized I already had everything I needed to paint the entire production (minus a few gallons of white paint). Unsurprisingly, this was an ambitious production, and I ended up painting two beds, two giant wooden doors, two castle walls, an interior wallpaper design, a fireplace, Kristoff’s cart, Oaken’s sauna, a side table, and a giant marble floor–all with paint WCT already had in stock.
