Millennial Fantasy is an ongoing self-assigned character design project that reimagines mythical beings as Millennials. Being a Millennial/Gen-Z-cusper and fantasy nerd myself, I approached this collection of characters with love and a tongue-in-cheek sense of humor, drawing inspiration from David Sedaris' Santaland Diaries, my sister's stories from working retail at Christmas, and my own childhood fantasies. I wanted to create a world that felt somewhere between our own and that of fairy tales, with all the childlike wonder and play that connotes. Some characters in the group lean more heavily into reality and some more into the realm of the fantastic, but together they represent a collective call to imagination; I may not be a sparkly mermaid with jazzy eel backup singers, but it's not too hard to see the magic in my everyday life.
